The Defrauding
83:1
وَيْلٌ لِّلْمُطَفِّفِينَ
Woe to Al-Mutaffifûn (those who give less in measure and weight).

83:2
ٱلَّذِينَ إِذَا ٱكْتَالُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ يَسْتَوْفُونَ
Those who, when they have to receive by measure from men, demand full measure,

83:3
وَإِذَا كَالُوهُمْ أَو وَّزَنُوهُمْ يُخْسِرُونَ
And when they have to give by measure or weight to (other) men, give less than due.

83:4
أَلَا يَظُنُّ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَنَّهُم مَّبْعُوثُونَ
Do they not think that they will be resurrected (for reckoning),

83:5
لِيَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ
On a Great Day?
— Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali & Muhammad Muhsin Khan
83:6
يَوْمَ يَقُومُ ٱلنَّاسُ لِرَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
The Day when (all) mankind will stand before the Lord of the ‘Âlamîn (mankind, jinn and all that exists)?

83:7
كَلَّآ إِنَّ كِتَـٰبَ ٱلْفُجَّارِ لَفِى سِجِّينٍ
Nay! Truly, the Record (writing of the deeds) of the Fujjâr (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, evil-doers and the wicked) is (preserved) in Sijjîn.

83:8
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا سِجِّينٌ
And what will make you know what Sijjîn is?

83:9
كِتَـٰبٌ مَّرْقُومٌ
A Register inscribed.
— Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali & Muhammad Muhsin Khan
83:10
وَيْلٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ
Woe, that Day, to those who deny.
— Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali & Muhammad Muhsin Khan
83:11
ٱلَّذِينَ يُكَذِّبُونَ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ
Those who deny the Day of Recompense.

83:12
وَمَا يُكَذِّبُ بِهِۦٓ إِلَّا كُلُّ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ
And none can deny it except every transgressor beyond bounds, (in disbelief, oppression and disobedience to Allâh) the sinner!

83:13
إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ ءَايَـٰتُنَا قَالَ أَسَـٰطِيرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
When Our Verses (of the Qur’ân) are recited to him he says: "Tales of the ancients!"

83:14
كَلَّا ۖ بَلْ ۜ رَانَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ
Nay! But on their hearts is the Rân (covering of sins and evil deeds) which they used to earn.

83:15
كَلَّآ إِنَّهُمْ عَن رَّبِّهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ لَّمَحْجُوبُونَ
Nay! Surely they (evil-doers) will be veiled from seeing their Lord that Day.

83:16
ثُمَّ إِنَّهُمْ لَصَالُوا۟ ٱلْجَحِيمِ
Then, verily, they will indeed enter (and taste) the burning flame of Hell.

83:17
ثُمَّ يُقَالُ هَـٰذَا ٱلَّذِى كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ
Then, it will be said to them: "This is what you used to deny!"

83:18
كَلَّآ إِنَّ كِتَـٰبَ ٱلْأَبْرَارِ لَفِى عِلِّيِّينَ
Nay! Verily, the Record (writing of the deeds) of Al-Abrâr (the pious believers of Islamic Monotheism) is (preserved) in ‘Illiyyûn

83:19
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا عِلِّيُّونَ
And what will make you know what ‘Illiyyûn is?

83:20
كِتَـٰبٌ مَّرْقُومٌ
A Register inscribed,
— Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali & Muhammad Muhsin Khan
83:21
يَشْهَدُهُ ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ
To which bear witness those nearest (to Allâh, i.e. the angels).
— Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali & Muhammad Muhsin Khan
83:22
إِنَّ ٱلْأَبْرَارَ لَفِى نَعِيمٍ
Verily, Al-Abrâr (the pious believers of Islamic Monotheism) will be in Delight (Paradise).

83:23
عَلَى ٱلْأَرَآئِكِ يَنظُرُونَ
On thrones, looking (at all things).

83:24
تَعْرِفُ فِى وُجُوهِهِمْ نَضْرَةَ ٱلنَّعِيمِ
You will recognise in their faces the brightness of delight.

83:25
يُسْقَوْنَ مِن رَّحِيقٍ مَّخْتُومٍ
They will be given to drink of pure sealed wine.

83:26
خِتَـٰمُهُۥ مِسْكٌ ۚ وَفِى ذَٰلِكَ فَلْيَتَنَافَسِ ٱلْمُتَنَـٰفِسُونَ
The last thereof (that wine) will be the smell of Musk, and for this let (all) those strive who want to strive (i.e. hasten earnestly to the obedience of Allah).

83:27
وَمِزَاجُهُۥ مِن تَسْنِيمٍ
It (that wine) will be mixed with Tasnîm:

83:28
عَيْنًا يَشْرَبُ بِهَا ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ
A spring whereof drink those nearest to Allâh.

83:29
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ أَجْرَمُوا۟ كَانُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ يَضْحَكُونَ
Verily, (during the worldly life) those who committed crimes used to laugh at those who believed.

83:30
وَإِذَا مَرُّوا۟ بِهِمْ يَتَغَامَزُونَ
And, whenever they passed by them, used to wink one to another (in mockery).

83:31
وَإِذَا ٱنقَلَبُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِمُ ٱنقَلَبُوا۟ فَكِهِينَ
And when they returned to their own people, they would return jesting;

83:32
وَإِذَا رَأَوْهُمْ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ لَضَآلُّونَ
And when they saw them, they said: "Verily these have indeed gone astray!"

83:33
وَمَآ أُرْسِلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِمْ حَـٰفِظِينَ
But they (disbelievers, sinners) had not been sent as watchers over them (the believers).

83:34
فَٱلْيَوْمَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلْكُفَّارِ يَضْحَكُونَ
But this Day (the Day of Resurrection) those who believe will laugh at the disbelievers

83:35
عَلَى ٱلْأَرَآئِكِ يَنظُرُونَ
On (high) thrones, looking (at all things).

83:36
هَلْ ثُوِّبَ ٱلْكُفَّارُ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَفْعَلُونَ
Are not the disbelievers paid (fully) for what they used to do?
